Storm Water Services' mission is to serve the City of Charlotte by improving surface waters and conveying rainwater safely through well-maintained storm drainage systems. Each year Storm Water Services invests $100+ million in capital improvements and staff manages hundreds of storm drainage improvement projects. Storm Water Services is one of the largest stormwater utilities in the Southeast with approximately 215,000 customer accounts and more than 200 full-time positions.

Summary

This position is part of the Storm Water Services Communications team and is primarily responsible for successful implementation of internal and external communications that support Storm Water Services’ mission and strategic priorities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced, professional work in development and implementation of public information activities.
  • Develop clear and effective written communications about Storm Water Services’ work, reaching various audiences. 
  • Develop informative and compelling written content for internal communications to Storm Water Services staff.
  • Respond promptly to media inquiries, prepare written statements and releases, coordinate media availabilities, monitor media, and build media relationships.
  • Contribute to educational campaigns including creative direction, messaging, social media, website and other content.
  • Manage translation and interpretation requests and implement initiatives to ensure effective communications for all.
  • Work with Communication team colleagues in developing public information strategies and plans, including social media strategy and management.
  • Support community engagement initiatives and execute special projects as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent writing, storytelling, and editing skills and proficient in AP style
  • On-camera and public speaking skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to various audiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of content creation for all media platforms
  • Advanced skills in MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, PublicInput.com
  • Willing to work public events during evenings/weekends as needed
  • Successful candidate must have a valid driver's license and ability to receive and maintain a City Driving Permit

Qualifications

Preferred Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field
  • Minimum of five years in a public relations or communications position 
  • Experience in content writing across all media platforms, media relations, paid media, social media management
  • Background in stormwater, infrastructure, water resources, natural resources, environmental science and/or government, non-profit experience 
 

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and seven years relevant experience.

Or

Associate's Degree and five years relevant experience.

Or

Bachelor's Degree and one year relevant experience
