Deputy Communications Director

The City of Charlotte is seeking an innovative and enthusiastic individual who wants to make an impact on the city and our community. This position will report directly to the Communications Director, the city’s chief communications and marketing officer.
The Deputy Communications Director will manage the day-to-day operations of the department, lead department staff to develop and implement communications/marketing strategies and programs, provide counsel and expertise to city leaders while working in a fast-paced, highly visible organization with enthusiasm and energy.
Management/oversight responsibilities include, but is not limited to strategic planning, media relations, public relations, issues management & crisis communications, social media/digital content creation and distribution, constituent services, internal communications, event management and community engagement.
The position will require occasional work on nights, early mornings and weekends, as well as shared on-call responsibilities on nights/weekends.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directly manage teams and staff while working successfully and collaboratively across larger communications & marketing leadership team
- Maintain excellent relationships with city leadership, staff and city’s elected officials
- Create & manage budgets / deadlines / objectives / schedules
- Set objectives for CCM team and assign tasks and projects to team, and manage teams to successful outcomes
- Ensure brand consistency in all communication efforts
- Lead events increasing awareness of City
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Critical thinker understanding departmental goals and how CC&M can support/drive goals
- Experience crafting messaging and communications campaigns
- Ability to work in fast-paced and highly visible organization
- Excellent leadership & communications skills / presentation abilities
- Understanding & interest in current events, politics and government, and ability to anticipate public reaction and think strategically
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle simultaneous priority projects and meet established deadlines
- Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment within general policy guidelines
- Ability to work well with different team members and manage lateral reporting relationships
- Understanding of crisis communications strategies
- Experience in media/public relations, social media management, content creation/distribution, managing digital platforms
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English/Communications/Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising/Journalism or similar field
- Eight years of experience in-house or communications agency
- Experience managing people and teams across complex / integrated organization
- Experience in government or in highly-regulated industries
- Track record of successful coaching and managing staff
- Track record of developing and executing communications and marketing strategies/campaigns
- Experience working with journalists, responding to media requests and with issues management/crisis communications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with ten (10) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties
