As trust in media, government and business in general erodes, people are turning to that which they know and can control: the relationship with their employer. The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer has revealed that "my employer" is now the most trusted institution a first in the study's 19-year history. With this elevated trust comes with new and high expectations: Today's employees expect their organizations to speak up on challenging and sensitive issues such as pay equity, discrimination, diversity and training for the jobs of tomorrow and take the lead on creating change instead of waiting for government to impose it. They also expect their employers to have a greater purpose in society beyond making money, and one in four prospective employees will flat out refuse to work for a company that fails to deliver meaningful societal impact. Employees also expect to contribute to that impact in their everyday jobs, be informed about what's going on at work, have a voice that is genuinely heard and be empowered to take action.

Yet employers are largely failing to meet these high expectations. The downstream effects are significant: Without a strong employer-employee relationship, external credibility and trust will suffer, as will recruiting and retention. Conversely, when employees do trust their employer, they are far more willing to advocate for their company, stay loyal and be strongly committed to their jobs and the customers they serve.  In this environment, employers need to get comfortable with their role as the trusted partner in creating societal change. Tamara Rodman will share key insights from the study and four actions organizations can take to put trust to work.
